Poetry Contest in Dark Sky Magazine

DSM Poetry Contest Update

DSM Poetry Contest

To all those who have submitted poems to our first annual poetry contest, Thank You. We are encouraged by your enthusiasm and talent. Seriously, the work thus far has been great reading. For those who have not yet submitted, please do so soon. We are only accepting 300 applications. Doing so gives us plenty of time to sort, select and determine our winner. Spots are going fast. So again, if you want to participate in our contest, in which the grand prize winner will see a book of his or her poems published, send your submissions today.

Currently we are reading the submissions that have come our way since opening the contest. This means that anyone who submitted between October 22nd and October 30th (tomorrow is the last day for submissions!), we are reading your work. You know who you are.

We provide contest updates each Friday.

Here’s some inspiration. It’s a video of Robert Lowell reading Old Flame. Thanks again, everyone. And have a great weekend.

Seattle in Dark Sky Magazine

A Foggy Morning in Seattle

Despite our somewhat solemn name, we here at Dark Sky Magazine are a cheerful bunch — optimistic, in touch with our surroundings. We appreciate a sunny morning just as much as a rain soaked afternoon. That said, we’re thinking today of storms. Lightning storms. When we lived in Charleston, SC, summer days were often punctuated by swift, heavy bouts of rain. Lightning, crackling like neon spiderwebs across the sky, held us enthralled. Here in Seattle the weather is temperate, the rain a stable presence. But we have yet to witness a storm, or any other meteorological theatrics. We miss Charleston’s bent-back trees, its flooded streets and toppled yard ornaments. To hold us over until the Northwest’s sky breaks with light, we offer this video of a Toronto lightning storm. Happy weekend, dear reader.

Flannery O'Connor in Dark Sky Magazine

In today’s Literary Grab Bag we included a link to a story about writers’ homes. One of those homes belonged to Flannery O’Connor. This got us thinking. It’s been a while since our last reading of Everything That Rises Must Converge, or her novel, The Violent Bear It Away. That said, we expect that you, dear reader, like us, have a stack of books waiting to be devoured. Maybe you didn’t anticipate exhuming the O’Connor tome quite yet. Don’t fret. Her work isn’t going anywhere. Here is an essay to tide you over.

Striptease in Dark Sky Magazine

Striptease, It's Better than the Scarlet Letter

The third weekend in July, 2009. It will never again happen. Know what we’re saying? Make it last, make it memorable, make it worth your while. Here’s what we have planned for Saturday: Ferry to downtown Seattle, walk to Capitol Hill, browse, cross to Queen Anne, browse, hurry to Pioneer Square, browse. Then it’s up to Belltown, where we will drink beer, then to Fremont, where we will drink beer, and finally back to Vashon Island by ferry and bus, in which we will review in our spinning head all the things we’ve learned, all the things we’ve done. You see? Big time weekend fun! Sunday in our recovery we will read. We like books. We like movies, too. But we like books more. Sometimes books become movies. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Here’s a list of movies made from books that you should not, under any circumstances, watch. Unless you are hungover on Sunday and have a masochistic bone to pick. In which case, enjoy! – Kevin Murphy

July 17, 2009

It’s Friday afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. So up we wrap this week’s posting with something that’s interesting, easy to digest and generally just good to know. It’s the novelist John Irving, talking shop. There’s plenty to glean from his conversation with Book Lounge. So listen up and get your learn on. It’s not the weekend [...]
